WWE Passport To Smackdown Tour Results
By Kelvin Craig

Ric Flair kicked off the night by strolling down the ramp to rapturous applause from the audience. Despite flying into town only a few hours before the show he spoke at length about his love for us all and our city and all the beautiful ladies and all the rest of it. It was really a bit over the top, but the crowd loved this blatant insincerity and the Nature Boy could do no wrong.

Paul Heyman marched down to the ring to interrupt Flair and had tremendous heel heat right from the start, earning himself a loud “Heyman’s a wanker” chant. These two argued back and forth for a while, getting the crowd going, before coming to blows. Right as Flair was about to put Heyman into the figure four, A-Train ran down to the ring and chased Flair out to the ramp. Heyman hugged the big hairy shirtless dude which prompted the crowd to loudly question his sexuality. Heyman did the old “What? Who, me? No way” routine before jumping up and wrapping his arms and legs around A-Train before they departed. People up front were yelling “Gay-Train”.

The first match up was a three way between Tajiri, Misterio, and Jamie Knoble. This was great, but pretty much the same match you’d see on TV, right down to the distraction/mist finish when Tajiri won after about 7 or 8 minutes. Misterio did the 619 on Tajiri after the match.

Kidman & Funaki beat Benjamin & Haas, with Kidman using the Shooting Star Press as the finisher. Both he and Funaki pulled out some spectacular moves.

Ultimo Dragon beat Shannon Moore in a good match. It was great to see so many accomplished wrestlers in one night.

It was also good to be able to watch the action without Michael Cole’s annoying commentary. There were no commentators live in the stadium. The video screens only showed the entrance videos, not the action in the ring, although cameramen were filming the event.

Thankfully there were very few signs. No matter how good your intentions, if you are over the age of twelve and carry a sign into a wrestling show, you cannot reasonably expect to attract female company any time soon. As if to prove this point, I saw two guys have a sign which simply read “C**T” (but uncensored) confiscated upon entry.

The match of the night was the Bashams v. Guerreros. Eddie and Chavo really got the crowd into it before the match actually started, stealing the belts and running around ringside with them, showing them off to the crowd and handing one to a fan to hold up. The bout itself lived up to expectations, mainly due to the speed and skill of the Guerreros. Eddie in particular was just amazing. The Bashams won with the usual distraction/switch, then left with their belts. At this point Eddie and Chavo received a lengthy standing ovation, easily the biggest pop of the night, and thoroughly deserved. Eddie grabbed a mic and thanked the crowd.

Rikishi & Scotty 2 Hotty beat the FBI. The faces were over bigtime in this match, especially with the family audience. Rikishi is so big it’s hard to see all of him. Maybe it was just difficult to fathom because he measured so far horizontally from front to back. I guess I thought he’d be big but I just couldn’t believe it. Thankfully Johnny Stamboli turned his head to the side for the stinkface. There’s no need to put your face in there. I really don’t think there’s ever been much call for that move. I guess Vince just needs to keep seeing it or at least know it’s happening… The thing that really stuck in my mind about this match was the sick finishing move Rikishi used on Nunzio. I guess it was a sitdown piledriver, but it wasn’t really a gradually-falling-backward kind of thing. It was more of a “Michinoku PileDriver” and looked extremely brutal. Nunzio was dragged out of the ring by Stamboli and Chuck Palumbo (who had done a run-in earlier in the match) and walked to the back, so I guess he’s OK. After the match a kid was pulled up from the crowd for a celebratory dance with the victors. He did a good worm and got one of the biggest pops of the night.

Sergeant Slaughter was spotted sitting near ringside in between matches and a chant started for him.

The worst match was Flair v. A-Train. This was terrible. I’m as willing as most fans to suspend my disbelief, but when an old guy slaps a huge monster guy across the chest and the huge monster guy reels halfway across the ring and falls into the ropes, it’s a bit much. And A-Train was on his knees, begging off from Flair, who only once or twice in the match made an entertaining move to nearly pull the bout out of the doldrums. A-Train lost to the figure four leglock.

John Cena & Hardcore Holly beat Big Show & Matt Morgan. Cena rapped up a storm before the match. Genuinely funny. The Big Show was kinda like Rikishi but taller. It was incredible to see Cena hold that huge monstrous blob up on his shoulders for the FU finish. Fantastic.

Next up was a “Tiny Teddy” contest to provide the t’n’a quota for the evening. Nidia was funny with her walking stick and fell over. Shaniqua’s a big healthy girl. Dawn Marie won wearing a g-string, which is cheating really, but I didn’t hear anyone complain. I just wondered where Torrie Wilson was. Well, I often wonder about her, but anyway… Shaniqua dropped Dawn Marie with a clothesline, then Bradshaw (who was judging or loitering or whatever) used the same move on Shaniqua. I wonder if he asked her out afterwards. I’m not sure why I wonder about that, but I’d like to think that he explained the clothesline away as being just a regular part of his standard courting procedure.

Going to a mainstream pro-wrestling event I had a fair idea of what kind of crowd to expect - a lot of families and a lot of young male boofheads, but geez there were some mongos in attendance! I had enough bad karma to sit next to probably the worst one. This big drongo was like a parrot that regurgitated the catchphrases from WCW circa 2000. For example when Benoit came out he’d jump up and yell “Four Horsemen!! He’s Canadian!! Don’t blame Canada, blame yourself!! He’s Canadian!!” There were times when he was sat down or told to shut up, but generally carried on like that for the whole night. I didn’t dare read his sign, which was a piece of paper he held up. I could see how there’d be so many fights at WWE events in the US.

Next up was the Lesnar / Benoit headlining match, which was the first hint the crowd had that Nathan Jones might not appear. The match itself was OK, but nothing great. It just seemed like nothing really happened, apart from a lot of stalling. Lesnar won of course.

I don’t think anyone complained too loudly about the Nathan Jones non-appearance, but perhaps due partly to that and the average main event there was a slightly anti-climactic atmosphere in the stadium after the show, even though it was basically a good night.

The two buses driving the performers away from the venue after the show were stuck in the same traffic jam as the audience. I dread to think of their schedule on this tour. They all looked so exhausted and dejected.

Global Warning (Telstra Dome)
Saturday 10th August 2002

New attendance record for Colonial Stadium : 56,734

Steph comes out to welcome everyone to the show. She intro's Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman who come out and rag on Hogan.

1. Rikishi p. Rico (Kiss My Ass match)

Lots of nice kicks by Rico, but a missed moonsault and a Rikishi driver later and it's dinner time for Rico in around 3 minutes. Phat boy busted a move with two kids from the audience post-match.

2. Randy Orton & Mark Henry d. D-Von Dudley & Batista

By the books tag. Henry pinned D-Von with a powerslam in about 5 mins.

3. Cruiserweight Title: Jamie Knoble w/Nidia p. Hurricane

Hurricane uncorked a Santo dive. Standard fair with some great near falls towards the end. Nidia distracted Hurricane and Knoble got the pin via a backslide with his feet on the ropes.

4. 'Tough Enough Challenge': Billy & Chuck w/Rico vs. Chavo Guerrero & Hardcore Holly

The challenge was who was 'tough enough' not to hit the aisles towards the concessions. God awful match full of stalling and vain attempts by Chavo to raise the dead. Chavo victory-rolled Chuck for the pin as the heels attempted the LOD finish.

5. 'Raw vs. Smackdown': Kurt Angle p. Test

A world of difference, both guys out with their working shoes on and assembling a good, solid contest. Great false finishes before Test finally fell to the Angle slam.

6. WWE Tag Titles: Lance Storm & Christian vs. Kidman & Rey Misterio

Great match, chock full of hot spots. Kidman with the shooting star and Rey uncorking a swinging rana from the top, a huracanrana vaulting off Kidman and a picture-perfect Asai moonsault. Storm dropped Kidman with a tag strap to retain.

7. 'Raw vs. Smackdown': Chris Jericho vs. Edge

A heel masterclass on the mic from Jericho, the audience eating out of his hand. Slow burner, concluding with a great ralley of near falls that had everyone out of their seats numerous times. Jericho eventually turned Edge for the Walls but Edge smartly reversed into an inside cradle for the pin.

8. 'Bra & Panties': Torrie Wilson d. Stacey Kiebler

Valbowski did his usual schtick as ring announcer. Usual T&A including a roll in the hay for the ref who wound up with his strides down, as did an interfering Nidia. Torrie got the win after a second attempt at the finish.

9. WWE Undisputed Title/ No DQ: Rock vs. Brock Lesnar vs. HHH

In a word, tame. Very ordinary match with all the usual 3-way antics, but very little else. Lesnar posted HHH and he juiced. All the standard teases and near falls with the various finshers before HHH walked into the Rock Bottom for the pin. Picked up towards the end.

Post-match saw Rock & HHH clean house on Lesnar before Heyman entered into a very funny begging routine. The comedy ended with a People's Elbow from both Rock and HHH on Heyman.

From a fans perspective, probably a thumbs up. Everyone seemed to have a great time and no doubting the WWE knows how to put on a show. My perspective however, thumbs down. 56,000, ringsiders paying as much as $750 AUD, certainly deserved better.

Global Warning Rumours

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 2002--World Wrestling Entertainment's Global Warning Tour in Melbourne, Australia, broke the attendance record at Colonial Stadium on Saturday, August 10.

More than 56,700 people were at the event, breaking the previous attendance record. The Global Warning Tour Melbourne grossed approximately $5.7 million Australian dollars (US$3 million).

More than 8,000 fans attended the two-day WWE Fan Frenzy(TM) leading up to the live event at Colonial Stadium. The fan festival included WWE(TM) Superstar autographs, exclusive WWE(TM) memorabilia, merchandise and collectibles, and an arena size X-Box interactive area.

"We received a tremendous response from our fans in Australia and we thank them for their support and hospitality," said Roger Marment, WWE's Executive Vice President, International Business Development. "We are looking forward to an encore performance next year. This tour has kick started our business in Australia, and is another example of the international strength of our brand."

FAN FRENZY

Fan Frenzy takes place at the Crown Showroom on Thursday August 8 and Friday August 9. Eight two-hour sessions of Fan Frenzy are happening over the two days.

WWE Fan Frenzy resembles Fan Axxess, the interactive fan experience that has preceded WrestleMania in recent years. WrestleMania is the biggest event on the sports-entertainment calendar. This year’s Fan Axxess, in Toronto, attracted more than 30,000 fans in three days. Like Axxess, Fan Frenzy features a wide range of interactive exhibits.

One of the most popular features of Axxess, the Fantasy Play-by-Play, will also be available in the Crown Showroom. Fans, sitting in front of a big-screen television that shows exciting in-ring action, can call the match just like WWE commentators. They even walk away with a free videotape of their performance.

But perhaps the most popular of all features at Fan Frenzy will be the Autograph Booths that allow fans to see their favorite Superstars up close and in person. Several Superstars will sign autographs at each Fan Frenzy session, a fact that pleases WWE fans and Superstars alike.

At the Hall of Fame exhibit, fans can spread their palms into the sprawling life size hand moulds from Andre the Giant and the Big Show. Fans can get an even better understanding of the Superstars size and physique by snapping their pictures next to life-sized cutouts.

History buffs aren’t the only ones who’ll have plenty to do at Fan Frenzy. The festival has plenty to offer technophiles, beginning with an arena-sized screen plugged into the Microsoft XBOX that will allow gamers the chance to compete on the hot new video game “WWE RAW.” Several other XBOX kiosks will be spread throughout the showroom, allowing fans to test their skills against one another. The lucky fan that defeats all the other challengers gets the ultimate prize of competing against a WWE Superstar.

Live Band ‘Pacer 21’ fresh from the ‘Vans Warped Tour’ features in every session whilst roaming hostesses applying temporary tattoos to Fans who want to make their mark.

Also planned for Fan Frenzy is a ring-like stage where Superstars will appear to answer fans’ questions. A select few will even get called into the ring to compete for prizes in competition officiated by the WWE Superstars.

Several other areas, such as Body Slam and The Cage allow fans to interact with Superstars while competing against each other in WWE trivia and physical competitions.

Add to this, the opportunity to purchase Official Global Warning Tour Melbourne Merchandise in the Shop zone and the range of WWE DVD’s at the Shock Shop, and you have an event that no wrestling fan can afford to miss!

HULK HOGAN COMMENTS

Q. What can the fans expect when Hulkamania runs wild on Australia?

"The fans can expect a life-changing experience if they're fortunate enough to get into the arena. They won't even need a seat because when Hulk Hogan hits the ring in Australia, brother, everybody will be standing from the moment I enter the building. It's going to be wild, it's going to be crazy, and I actually feel sorry for the victim who is going to be across the ring from me. Because there's no way that I can miss a step, slip on a banana peel or lose a match with all the Australian Hulkamaniacs who have been my fans for over 20 years in my corner. I'm finally coming to Australia to party with all the Hulkamaniacs, and the party's going to happen right in the middle of the WWE ring".

Q. On Smackdown and at the pay-per-views, you appear to have been totally blown away by the fan warmth and loyalty displayed in since returning to the WWE and rightly so. Can you put into words your inner thoughts and emotions in respect of this phenomenon?

"It's such an emotional high to see these fans who have believed and have followed my career. They're living with me in this body. And when I go out to that ring, I'm not out there by myself. It's such a high to hear how excited they are, to hear how loyal they are and to hear the love that they have for Hulkamania. It's something that's the base of WWE. It's the base of sports-entertainment. Every time I go to the ring, the Hulkamaniacs are so loud that I actually have to use hand signs to get them to calm down so I can talk. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. I've seen Stone Cold Steve Austin hit the ring. That's a phenomenon. I've seen The Rock hit the ring. I definitely can smell what The Rock is cookin'. I've seen the Undertaker, with the 10 years of devastation and destruction. I've seen Triple H, the consummate professional. But without a doubt, you can put all those together, and there's no way they can overpower the emotional, real excitement that the Hulkamaniacs generate. It's unbelievable".

Q. I realise this will be your first time to Australia but will it be your last time down with the WWE? How long will Hulk Hogan remain active as an in-ring competitor?

"I don't know. I thought that this would be a really short burst of energy. I thought that being 48 years old and trying to run day and night that I couldn't keep up. But now that I've gotten on this roll - now that this Hulkamania thing has gotten so powerful - I forget about the wrist that hurts, the bad shoulder, the knee that used to hurt. I forget about the sore back or the broken ribs. This whole deal, when I go out there, turns me from just a mortal man to some crazy energy form. I don't know how long it's going to last. I'm not in charge of that anymore. I mean, I'm the servant to this Hulkamania excitement. I'm going to follow the fans' lead. When they get tired of seeing me - when they get tired of cheering, when they get silent, or when they start booing me - that's when I'll leave. But until then, I'm just going to go ahead and ride this high. This is just like catching the magic carpet. I don't know when it's going to stop".

- The WWE sold more than 43,000 tickets this week for the Global Warning Tour, coming to Colonial Stadium in Melbourne on August 10. Investigation on the Ticketmaster7 website suggests the only tickets left are Endzone or top deck $29.95 (cheap) seats. The fans are set to raise the roof at Colonial and the tour promises to be a big money-spinner for the WWE.

The Ticketmaster7 Internet site, ticketmaster7.com, the national Call Centre, and Outlet network were swamped with loyal WWE(TM) fans from all over the world eager to get their hands on the hottest ticket in town. The demand was so huge that Telstra recorded over 150,000 callers attempting to secure tickets via the phone in the first hour.

Ticketmaster7's Managing Director, Maria O'Connor was impressed by the magnitude of WWE(TM) fans desperate to secure tickets and said, "in my 20 years in the ticketing industry I have not witnessed such a large number of avid fans so desperate to secure tickets. ARTICLE - Global Warning Turns To Meltdown

"Just how big is the big, big wrasslin' Global Warning show which hits Colonial in August?

Bloody huge, according to the folk at Telstra and Ticketmaster. According to our information, the phone network bounced back 150,000 calls for tickets in the first hour.

That's right - 150,000 in 60 minutes.

Let's see, by our rough calculations, that's about 42 calls per second.......and they're just the calls that didn't get through.

All the primo seats, including the $750 diamond ringside tickets for the first 12 rows went pronto and the poor folk at Ticketmaster had to deal with many wrasslin' fans who missed out. They weren't happy.

Maybe next time they should just chuck all the tickets into a ring and let the fans fight amongst themselves".
